I begin this post with some misgivings. In writing it, I stand to alienate some, and potentially paint myself as short-sighted, unpatriotic, and even curmudgeonly. What I can’t quite shake is the sense that it needs to be said, even if many (perhaps even my mom) think less of me.

An awesome article about the state of life these days based, in part, on the recent Olympic ceremonies.

Congressman Paul Returns Over $100,000 to Treasury:

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Ron Paul has continued to run his Congressional office in a frugal manner, and was able to return more than $100,000 from his allotted office budget to the Treasury this year, an increase over the $90,000 returned last year.

“Since my first year in Congress representing the 14th district I have managed my office in a frugal manner, instructing staff to provide the greatest possible service to the people of the 14th district at the least possible cost to taxpayers,” said Paul.

I don’t always agree with 37signals, some of us have to work in settings that we don’t have full control over and that aren’t so ideal, but Jason Fried nails the problem with the corporate workplace. I have my whole office to myself and even I find myself doing work after hours because that’s the only time that is interruption-free.

If the middle equals neutral, as it should, then the formula is:

★ = You hated it. The song drove you completely mad and you wanted to turn it off long before it ended; the restaurant was so unsatisfying that you need to tell people to avoid it, so you’re on Yelp giving it one star and angrily explaining why; the article’s subject was terribly conveyed and it seems as though the author gave little attention to the voice/spelling/grammar.
★★ = You didn’t like it. The song wasn’t as good as you had hoped; the restaurant wasn’t worth the price, or the service was subpar, or the food was unsatisfying; the article wasn’t informative and, in the end, you wish you had skipped it.
★★★ = You’re neutral. The song wasn’t bad or good; the restaurant did their job and didn’t impress or disgust you; the article was informative and easy to read, but it was not enlightening nor a waste of your time.
★★★★ = You liked it. The song was better than expected and you’d be happy to hear it again; the restaurant was impressive and you hope to visit it again some day; the article was informative and told you about something that positively affected you.
★★★★★ = You thought it was the best of its class. The song was simply incredible, you’ll be telling your friends about it, and it’s definitely playing a second or third time right now; the restaurant’s food, service, and price were so impressive that you’ll be telling your friends about it and you know you’ll bring somebody there in the near future; the article was incredibly well-written, enlightening, and it told you about something that changes the way you think about it.

Our two-month old Keurig broke over the weekend. Bed Bath & Beyond swapped it out for a new one without asking for our receipt, without looking up our original transaction, and without asking for the credit card originally used. BBB FTW.
